After many weeks of learning new skills in clay and making and glazing our sculptures, we had a fantastic sharing event and art exhibition on the 23rd of march.
here are a few pictures from the day…
This week we will begin to colour our clay sculptures with coloured slips and under glazes. Coloured slips are made up of various ingredients including clay with strong colour stains added, they usly come in various light shades or colours where as under glazes can be very bright.
Here’s a tutorial on how to decorate a piece that I will be showing the children…
Inspiration for our clay totem sculptures that we are creating have come from a whole variety of sources:
We have explored a wide range of wonderful sealife creatures as seen in coral reef communities….
We looked at my own ceramic sculptures that are inspired by natural forms such as flowers and cacti…
And other artists that liked natural forms…
Also various artists from around the world that create totem sculptures.
We were also inspired by the Artist Anthony Gormley and his artwork ‘The Field’. With our mini me sculptures we will create our very own community which will be displayed around the school in unexpected places…
We explored textures and patterns through drawings and then learnt how to translate these onto our own clay sculptures…
We have also began to explore how our finished totem sculptures may look through detailed design drawings…
Hello! i am Elaine Lim-Newton, i am a sculpture artist who mainly works with clay. As part of the Every Child is an Artist Project i will be working with years 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 to experience and make our own fantastic sculptures in clay using lots of different techniques.
We will be making sculptures in a variety of clays, sizes and shapes and colour them with bright clay slips ( runny coloured clay) and shiny glazes. The finished sculptures will be exhibited in a fantastic final event and hopefully be enjoyed by everyone for years to come.
The theme for this term is community so over the last two weeks we have been exploring this theme through drawings and designs. and creating our own 2d totems from the drawings.
We have also been introduced to clay, and have learnt how to prepare it and experiment with textures and mark making with lots of different tools and collected items.
Together we made a fantastic 5🌟 bug hotel.Half way trough building our hotel we had thousands of customers that wanted to go inside.we made a waiting room for all the worms, ladybugs and insects.finally we finished our bug hotel and let the bugs make there way in.It was a exiting and great day making our bug hotel.our class loved making the hotel.😃 !
In literacy we have been reading an e-book ‘The Museum of Fun’. The museum wasn’t attracting sufficient visitors so we were asked to create adverts to persuade more people to visit. Which advert do you think is the most persuasive? Please add comments to help us improve our performances.
On Wednesday 25th of January 2015 we went to the national space centre
And learnt all about the universe. As soon as we got there they showed us this cinema place which was epic ,because the roof (was a dome) and the walls were screens, a short movie came on all about space and it was from an astronauts view so it was like we were in space going super fast in a awesome rocket!!!!
We even got to go on our very own space mission to launch a probe into a comet, I was In charge of isolation.since nobody had found this comet before we named it after our school ‘oasis academy’.
On Wednesday the 26th we went on a trip to Leicester space centre it was a one hour drive there but when we got there it was massive there was a great big rocket tower the woman who talked to us she said there is 144 stairs to get to the top of the space centre . We watched a little movie all about space also the wall was a movie screen the movie told us all about space . We had to do a space mission and I was the navigator .
Yesterday on Wednesday the 25th of February 2015, class 5S went to a trip in Leicester to go to the National Space Centre, the building is called The Rocket Tower. We went to the planetarium and it looked 3D without the glasses and it was all about what would happen if you went to space without a suit
On Wednesday 25th February 2015 we went on a trip to the nation space centre in Leicester it was amazing
Once we went inside there it was incredible. We went searching around there and trying to completing the sheet that the Teachers gave.It was incredible and extremely massive. We also saw the Rocket and we also went in the lift and it was like shaking all of us around. At the end we swapped groups around and then, we had to pretend that we were really going in space , so I was the Life support, there were also the Medical, Navigation,Probe and that’s it.!
Class 5S had a brilliant time at The National Space Centre in Leicester. Watch our videos showing our mission into space to discover a brand new comet.
The first video shows the mission’s medical team at work.
The second clip shows how the comet was discovered and named.
Finally we show our success at firing a probe at the comet to take scientific samples.
